  3. Milbre Burch: Theatre of the Spoken Word

Internationally-known performer, GRAMMY™-nominated recording artist, published poet and writer and respected teacher of her craft, Milbre Burch is a storyteller in every sense of the word. Considered one of the most important voices in the American storytelling revival, she weaves gesture and language into personal, literary and traditional stories and dramatic monologues to create a whole new genre of storytelling. The New York Times praised her “classic wit” and the San Diego Union-Tribune called her “mesmerizing, like a fine solo dancer.” With a Masters Degree in Theater and ongoing graduate studies, Milbre is also an emerging scholar. She offers programs for adults, families and children including performances of fully staged one-woman shows such as "The World is the Storyteller’s Village," a family-oriented show which brings to the ear the wisdom of folktales from around the world. Another option, her “spoken word chamber concerts” require just a space and a microphone. One such family show "Making the Heart Whole Again: Stories of Peace and Justice and Reconciliation" includes stories from her GRAMMY nominated CD. Her educational programs on creating and telling stories include lectures, classes and workshops for adults. For schools she offers assemblies, artist residencies and teacher-in-services. She provides extensive resource materials including study guides and bibliographies. Her work for college campuses includes "Changing Skins: Folktales about Gender, Identity and Humanity," presented with a talkback session for audiences.
