A 4th generation horse and mule trader, Dan Hess grew up competing in local and state rodeos and, as an adult, embarked on a 12-year professional rodeo career. Along the way, Hess picked up cowboy lore from his elders, whom he calls the "last faint dying embers of the real old-time cowboys." He notes that songs and poetry are just as much a part of the rodeo business as riding and roping. Hess has written and recited cowboy poetry for nearly 50 years, earning invitations to perform three times at the National Cowboy Hall of Fame in Oklahoma and at Cowboy Poetry Gathering in Elko, Nevada. Hess is available for solo performances at schools, festivals, and concerts.
