ABOUT THE ARTS EDUCATION PROGRAMS
Arts education represents an important part of Missouri Arts Council's (MAC) overall vision for
developing the arts across the state. MAC recognizes that arts education teaches cognitive skills
not developed in the traditional classroom, giving students an extra edge by building effective
learning styles. The Arts Education Programs are designed to strengthen the place of the arts as a
core academic subject in the regular school curriculum and to promote using the arts to teach the
other core subjects. In addition, MAC seeks to encourage commitment to learning through the arts
among educators, parents, business and community members.
Program Descriptions
- School Touring Program
MAC's School Touring Program, which is the simplest of the arts education applications, funds
60% of artistic fees for public/private schools and non-profit organizations to bring performing
artist(s) into schools for assemblies with pre/post educational workshops or related activities.
Applications are accepted on the first Monday of each month (Tuesday in case of holiday) and must
be received between twelve and sixteen weeks prior to the first performance date. Performing
artists must be selected from MAC's Touring Program (MTP) roster or from the Missouri artists
listed on the Kansas City and St. Louis Young Audiences rosters. School Touring funds are
available on a first-come, first-served basis. The STP Guidelines and Application will be mailed
to you by request from the MAC office.

artistic fees and services, travel expenses, and the purchase of supplies and educational
materials. Requests submitted on the first Monday of any month may not exceed $5,000. Proposals
must be received at least eight weeks prior to the starting date of the project. If more than
$5,000 is requested, proposals can be accepted for the annual panel review of FY05 projects.
Application deadline is March 22, 2004 (draft deadline is February 13, 2004).
Artists in Residence
Designed to strengthen school arts programs such as music, visual arts, and theatre, the Artists
in Residence Program allows artists to work with students, teachers, parents, business and
community members through a variety of activities - workshops, classroom activities, rehearsals,
etc. Programs must include at least twenty hours of direct, hands-on experience between the
artist and specific identified target and exposure groups within the school and community.

Arts in the Curriculum
Arts in the Curriculum supports collaborations among artists, classroom teachers and
administrators who are implementing projects that will integrate curricula and use the arts as an
instructional tool. The program was developed to encourage schools to use the arts to teach other
core subjects such as communication arts, math, social studies, and science. Expenses for
professional artists who are engaged in these projects are matched by other expenses incurred
through the collaboration.

Out of School
The Out of School Program supports quality arts education programs for school-aged youth that
take place outside of the normal classroom day. This program subsidizes expenses for activities
that serve at-risk, urban, and/or rural underserved youth, and is open to all nonprofit
organizations, including public school districts and schools, except for colleges/universities
and MAC Established Institutions.

Professional Development
The Professional Development Program supports projects that provide learning opportunities, such
as presenting qualified speakers to teachers, school administrators, and artists. Financial
support for activities that develop skills for teaching the arts and for using the arts as an
instructional method for teaching other core curricula are eligible. Adherence to the
High-Quality Professional Development Standards, as defined by the Missouri Department of
Elementary and Secondary Education, will be a funding consideration.
